Dr. John Kalage

Executive Director

Since May 2015 (3rd since inception). John has more than 26 years of professional experience in senior strategic management roles in local and international NGOs having worked in Tanzania, Belgium, South Africa and Zambia, that is 6 years as the Director of Programme Operations at Save the Children International, Tanzania Office, 3 years as Country Director for  Student Partnership Worldwide (SPW) in Zambia and South Africa, 2 years Deputy Country Director for SPW Tanzania, and over ten years with World Vision International in different capacities, in Tanzania and Brussels.

John is a holder of the MSc Education for Sustainability from the London South Bank University (UK), B.A. Economics from the University of Dar es salaam, PhD. Business Administration (DBA – Honoris Causa) of the Commonwealth University.  He is a Board Chairperson for the Tanzania Education Network (TEN/MET), Board Member for The Africa Network Campaign on Education for All (ANCEFA), Railway Children Africa, Light for the World Belgium (Tanzania) and St Joseph Cathedral High School. He is also a member of the Governing Council of St John’s University of Tanzania, a member of Convocation Executive Committee of the University of Dar es Salaam, and also was a cluster leader of the Accountability for the Right to Education cluster of the Eastern and Central Africa Regional Education Learning Initiative (RELI) established in 2017.

John has offered invaluable contribution shaping government policies and strengthening different institutions for effective governance, leadership and programmes delivery for impact achievements, has facilitated leadership and management international trainings and has written/edited a number of publications.

Lilyan Omary

Executive Directors Secretary

Lilyan is the Secretary to the Executive Director. Her main duties include assisting the Executive Director to undertake her executive tasks effectively. Before joining HakiElimu in 2007, Lilyan worked with Tanzania Plantation Company (Sugar Production and Distribution Company) in Moshi as a Management Secretary. Lilyan is a trained and experienced secretary in administration and office management. She has a Diploma in Secretarial Services and is currently pursuing a second Diploma in Human Resource Management at the Institute of Social Work, Dar es Salaam

Benedicta Mrema

Program Officer- Regional Education Learning Initiative (RELI)

Benedicta holds a B.A Degree in Public Relations and Advertising from the University of Dar es Salaam. She has several years of working experience in the field of Communication and Media. She is currently working as a Programme Officer- Regional Education Learning Initiative-RELI at HakiElimu. Benedicta is also responsible for producing and hosting HakiElimu’s creative TV programs. She also moderates organizations’ events. Apart from her degree, Benedicta holds certificates in Critical Writing for Change, Budget and Accountability; and Monitoring and Evaluation from MS – TCDC, Arusha. Benedicta is expecting to graduate for a Masters Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Dar Es Salaam on May 2021.

Media Engagement and Advocacy Department

Manager

A Human Rights Lawyer and Development Communications Expert with over 10 years of experience in Human Rights and Media Engagement. Elisante joined HakiElimu in 2011 as a Policy Analysis and Advocacy Volunteer. He leads the design process and development of Media Campaigns for Advocacy, Behaviour Change, Gender, Child Protection, Citizen Mobilization for social change interventions in schools, as well as Programme/Project Planning and Management. Elisante has attended local and international training on Media and Communication, Human Rights, Policy Analysis and Advocacy, Civic Leadership, Gender and Child Protection. Before joining HakiElimu family, Elisante was a Human Rights Correspondent at the Majira Newspaper.

Abraham Lazaro

Programme Officer

Abraham Lazaro Mbuya is a human rights activist working with HakiElimu, as a program officer in Media Advocacy department managing digital media platforms and SMS. He has 10 years of professional experience in employing both traditional media and new media for social change. Abraham holds a master’s degree in Mass Communication from University of Dar- es- Salaam, a certificate in Advocacy from Coady International Institute at St. Xavier University and a certificate in Project Planning and Management from MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation in Eastern and Southern Africa. Programme Officer, Production – Media and Advocacy Programmes. Alinanuswe holds B.A. Fine and Performing Arts ( specializing in Film and Theatre Arts) from the University of Dar es Salaam. An expert in development of short films, programs, documentaries, commercials and advertisements for TV, he joined HakiElimu in 2014, bringing experience from the BBC and DW having worked in the East African Community Members States.

Media and Advocacy Programme Officer, Dennis is a holder of B.A. in Mass Communications. He is multi-skilled and multi-talented in media engagements, public speaking, photojournalism, scriptwriting, acting, producing audio programs and Tele-spots. Before joining the organisation, Denis was at SAHARA Media Group Limited in the capacity of News/Programs/Editor/Producer as well as Presenter for Radio Free Africa, Kiss Fm and Star TV.

Programme Officer – Print Media, Elvis is a holder of  B.A. Science in Mediated Content Development with over 5 years of experience in graphics design, content development, the use of ICT for pedagogical development, and developing technology solutions for the e-learning processes. Elvis Joined HakiElimu in 2020. Before that, he was at the Open University of Tanzania as an Instructional Designer and E-learning Specialist.

Community Engagement and Action Department

Pius Makomelelo

Manager

Pius works with HakiElimu as a Manager, Community Engagement and Action Unit since 2004. The Unit is responsible for coordinating the Friends of Education Movement which has thus far recorded over 40,000 members across the country. Before joining HakiElimu, Pius worked with Aide et Action as a Programme Monitoring and Evaluation Officer. Prior to that, Pius worked as a secondary school teacher at Bulima and Tagwa secondary schools in Mwanza region for three years. Pius holds a Masters of Science (MSc.) Degree in Poverty Reduction and Development Management from the University of Birmingham (UK), and B.A. Degree in Sociology from the University of Dar es Salaam.

Naomi joined HakiElimu in 2009 as a Programme Officer, Community Engagement and Action Unit. Naomi is responsible for enhancing capacity of Friends of Education and concerned citizens, specifically on monitoring and accountability in education implementation programmes. She also coordinates HakiElimu work in four primary and four secondary schools in Arusha Rural District. Naomi holds Masters Degree in Science in Development Policy from Mzumbe University, Morogoro, Tanzania. Before joining HakiElimu, she worked with the Local Government Authority as a Planning Officer.

 

Honoratus Swai

Programme Officer

Honoratus holds a Bachelors degree in philosophy and religious studies. He joined HakiElimu in 2008 having previously worked in Tanzania’s refugee camps under the Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS). Honoratus’ key achievements at HakiElimu include clarifying the concept of Friends of Education to stakeholders through various means including road show campaigns. He is also involved in the strengthening capacities of school committees through training and publications.

Peter works at HakiElimu as administrative officer responsible for office repairs and maintenance. Before joining HakiElimu, Peter worked with Hifab International and later on with Afriscan International for eight years as Maintenance Coordinator. Peter Tupa holds a B.A. Degree in Political Science and Economics from India.

Rosemary Mwenda

Librarian

Rosemary Mwenda works at HakiElimu as a Programme Assistant in the Media and Advocacy unit since 2007. She is responsible for newspaper monitoring activities. Before joining HakiElimu, Rose was working with the Savings and Credit Cooperative Union League of Tanzania (SCCULT) in Dar es Salaam and Mbeya as a personal secretary. Rose holds a certificate of Full Secretarial Course.

Mwemezi works as a Programme Officer, Research and Policy Analysis Unit at HakiElimu since 2012. His duties include working on budgeting and public expenditure tracking; advocacy on government transparency and accountability; and researching on policy and policy analysis. Before joining HakiElimu, Mwemezi worked with Business Times Limited as a Senior Business Journalist and Legal Officer for three years. Mwemezi holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies from The Law School of Tanzania. He also has a Bachelor Degree of Laws (Hons) from Tumaini University, Dar es Salaam.

Florige joined HakiElimu as a Programme Officer in the Research and Policy Analysis Unit in 2012. He has a B.A. Degree in Education and M.A. Degree in Development Studies from the University of Dar es Salaam. Apart from teaching Florige has extensive experience in education policy, research and publication. Before joining HakiElimu, Florige worked with St. Joseph’s Cathedral High School, Dar es Salaam as a teacher.

Steve joined HakiElimu in 2006. He supports the internal and external network infrastructure, the IT project management and server administration, and provides technical support to staff. His previous positions include Network and System Administrator at Mwananchi Communications Limited, and Helpdesk and Network Assistant Administrator at Soft-Tech Consulting Company. Stephen holds a BSc. Degree in Electronics and Communications from the University of Dar es Salaam, and MBA Degree from University of Maryland, USA. Steve is a Microsoft Certified Professional on Windows 2003 Server Administration and Maintenance, and Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist

Peter Letema

Accountant

Peter works at HakiElimu as an accountant. Before joining HakiElimu in 2011, he worked with NSSF as an Intern Accountant. Prior to that, he worked as Production statistician at Williamson Diamond mining company at Mwadui, Shinyanga. Peter graduated from the University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS) with a B.Com, Finance (Hons) in 2010 and is currently set to graduate with a CPA at the Tanzania National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA).

Esther K. Mashoto

Assistant Accountant

Esther holds an Advanced Diploma in Accountancy from the Tanzania Institute of Accountancy. Prior to joining HakiElimu, she worked with Tanzania Tea Blenders as an intern for three months. Esther’s main responsibilities at HakiElimu include upholding all finance unit’s tasks in accordance with the organisational administration policies and international accounting standards. Esther is currently registered for CPA course under module E. She attended a course on taxation issues in Tanzania with special focus on Value Added Tax (VAT), customs and excise duties and income tax.

Freddy is a holder of a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, and is currently pursuing Masters of Science in Procurement and Supply Chain Management at Mzumbe Business School. Before joining HakiElimu, Freddy worked with various organisations in various disciplines including management, marketing and administration. As an Administrative Officer, Freddy’s work focuses primarily on ensuring efficient procurement and proper management of assets at HakiElimu in compliance with the organisation’s Procurement and Asset Management Policy.

Raphael’s current position at HakiElimu is Administrative Assistant (Reception), a position he has held since 2010. Prior to that, Raphael worked as a security guard at HakiElimu since 2003. Raphael holds a driving license and a certificate in mechanics.

Mariam works as the Office Secretary at HakiElimu. She has extensive experience in office management, communication and public relations. Mariam is also the focal person for HIV/AIDS workplace intervention at HakiElimu.

Sylvand joined HakiElimu in 2002 from Danish Association for International Cooperation where he worked as a driver. At HakiElimu, Sylvand works as a driver, and he holds a certificate in driving from National Institute of Transport (NIT).

After completing his secondary school education, David Kagondi joined a vocational training center in Mwanza and successfully obtained a Fitter Mechanic Grade III certificate. He joined HakiElimu in April 2004 as an Administrative Assistant in charge of stores. Prior to joining HakiElimu, David worked with Kuleana Centre for children’s rights in Mwanza as Administrative Assistant.
